In my last blog I alluded to Psalm 46:10, "Be still and Know that I am God." In that blog I mostly concentrated on the being still part. Today I want to share what I hope will help you understand the "know" part.
God is so big that most of us feel so tiny and insignificant in His presence. We feel as if we will never know enough about God to be considered wise. I pray for wisdom almost every day and to be honest I don't think I make much headway! Actually, just when I think I am making progress I do something really stupid and wonder why God doesn't just give up on me. I guess, if nothing else, my blunders keep me humble!
But when I think about getting to know God, it really helps me to think about it in the same way I think about my good friends. Think about your best friend. How did you get to be best friends? You got to that point by spending time together talking, listening, sharing your heart with each other most likely. Over time you grew so close that you began to really trust each other and depend on each other. It didn't happen all at once.
The same is true with our relationship with God. We can't ever know Him if we don't spend time with Him. We need to talk with Him daily and not just do all the talking...but listen as well. Listen to what He is saying to our heart and mind. We can trust Him completely and share our deepest thoughts and desires and just like our best friend He will be there for us. And, what is even better is that, unlike our human buddy, He will never, ever let us down!
Again, Psalm 46:10 advises us to: "Be still and know that I am God."

Just "Being" With our Families
28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. 29 He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. 30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, 31 but those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.
We live in a world of speed. We can have our food instantly from the microwave; talk to our friends instantly through text messaging; send someone a copy of a document by fax (after we have made a copy quickly on the copy machine.) and we can change channels on our t.v.s in an instand by hitting one preset button. We get used to speed and then when we don’t have it we get impatient.
Our lives adjust to speed and it seems we go faster and faster. Just this week I have had conversations with my kids about the hectic sports schedules their kids have this spring. I don’t know how young families do it. They hold down jobs and are involved in so many activities that they are constantly on the go. I remember when my boys were children and we too were involved in sports it was hectic enough. But, at that time, it was usually one sport per season. Now, they overlap and a child can actually be involved in several sports at one time. And I admire the fact that so many young parents are actively involved in church and making sure their kids are involved there too. On top of everything else they are making sure they stay on top of school work and emphasizing the importance of a good education as well.
All of this has to take a toll on families – adults as well as children. I pray that family time doesn’t get compromised, couples time doesn’t suffer or children do not become exhausted. I love sports and I am glad my kids do too. My kids and their wives are great parents and are so good with their own kids. I am just using them as an example of what most families are experiencing because they are the ones I observe most. I also have a chance to observe a few other young families at our church and we have so many great young couples who are trying so hard to do the right things in their families. I have so much admiration for them!
I hope we all will realize that we need to stop and wait on the Lord to renew us. As the verses above say, He doesn’t ever get tired or weary but we will (even youth.) It is part of God’s plan (from the very beginning of creation) that we all take the time to rest. When we burn the candle at both ends, the candle doesn’t last very long!

I feel it is so very important for all of us, especially families, to realize the importance of just being together, doing nothing in particular. Make sure to schedule a time for your family to simply just be!
And for those of us who are "older" we need to pray every day that these dedicated young couples are looking to the Lord for their strength! Maybe, they will do a better job with their families than we did! I know my kids already are even with the stress of their lives!

Marching Through the Storms
I had a conversation yesterday with a good friend who I am worried might be wearing himself out and trying to do too much. This conversation triggered my mind to think about one of my favorite Bible stories in the Old Testament.
1 Kings 19: 1-12 (The Message version)
1-2 Ahab reported to Jezebel everything that Elijah had done, including the massacre of the prophets. Jezebel immediately sent a messenger to Elijah with her threat: "The gods will get you for this and I'll get even with you! By this time tomorrow you'll be as dead as any one of those prophets." 3-5 When Elijah saw how things were, he ran for dear life to Beersheba, far in the south of Judah. He left his young servant there and then went on into the desert another day's journey. He came to a lone broom bush and collapsed in its shade, wanting in the worst way to be done with it all—to just die: "Enough of this, God! Take my life—I'm ready to join my ancestors in the grave!" Exhausted, he fell asleep under the lone broom bush. Suddenly an angel shook him awake and said, "Get up and eat!" 6 He looked around and, to his surprise, right by his head were a loaf of bread baked on some coals and a jug of water. He ate the meal and went back to sleep.
7 The angel of God came back, shook him awake again, and said, "Get up and eat some more—you've got a long journey ahead of you." 8-9 He got up, ate and drank his fill, and set out. Nourished by that meal, he walked forty days and nights, all the way to the mountain of God, to Horeb. When he got there, he crawled into a cave and went to sleep. Then the word of God came to him: "So Elijah, what are you doing here?" 10 "I've been working my heart out for the God-of-the-Angel-Armies," said Elijah. "The people of Israel have abandoned your covenant, destroyed the places of worship, and murdered your prophets. I'm the only one left, and now they're trying to kill me." 11-12 Then he was told, "Go, stand on the mountain at attention before God. God will pass by." A hurricane wind ripped through the mountains and shattered the rocks before God, but God wasn't to be found in the wind; after the wind an earthquake, but God wasn't in the earthquake; and after the earthquake fire, but God wasn't in the fire; and after the fire a gentle and quiet whisper. 13-14 When Elijah heard the quiet voice, he muffled his face with his great cloak, went to the mouth of the cave, and stood there.
Elijah was scared, confused, discouraged, depressed and just plain worn out! We’ve all been there, haven’t we? We try and try to do the right thing but everything just seems to go against us. Just like Elijah we sometimes find ourselves looking in all the wrong places for God and wondering why we can’t find peace. I once read that Gigi Graham said “It’s hard to find God in a whirl-wind of activity or in an earthquake of frustration or a fire of over-commitment and busyness.” Yet, lots of times we can find him in “gentle stillness.” Ps. 46: 10 says “Be still and know that I am God.” That doesn’t mean that we just stop all of our activities. It is more like a quiet in our heart and soul when we get quiet and listen for a word from God.
To keep the devil from attacking us when we are tired and depressed we need to recharge our spiritual batteries. Spending much needed quiet time and reading Bible stories like this help me to re-fuel and recharge. I hope these passages and my thoughts will help you too. Be still….and grow in your Faith!

Marching to Beautiful Music
Back in the eighties I bought a couple of devotional books that I keep going back to time and time again when I need a short and meaningful devotion time that is always backed by scripture. Oddly enough they were both by Millie Stamm. I really don’t know much about Mrs. Stamm or even if she is still alive but this I know – she was very gifted at making scripture relevant in her devotional books.
Yesterday morning I picked up her book “Meditation Moments” and turned to the devotion for March 7th. As has occurred many times when I read her devotional messages, I was in awe of how she could take a small scripture passage and apply it to the life of a Christian. The verse was 2 Corinthians 8:5: “But first gave their own selves to the Lord.” I would like to share (in her words) the following from her writing:
“It has been said, “The gift without the giver is bare.” The Macedonian Christians………. had learned that God was more interested in them than in their gifts.
Today God is looking for those who are willing to give themselves to Him.
The story is told of how Fritz Kreisler, the famous violinist, obtained his treasured violin, the “Heart Guarnerius.” One day he heard someone playing it in a shop. He was so charmed by its tone that he asked to buy it, but he was told that the instrument had been sold to an Englishman, a collector of old violins.....
Week after week Kreisler pleaded with him to sell him the violin, but to no avail.
“One day the collector allowed Kreisler to play the instrument.” He played “as one condemned to death would have played to obtain ransom. …the Englishman, completely moved, said, “I have no right to keep it; it belongs to you. Go out into the world and let it be heard!” And Kreisler used the violin to produce the wonderful music, which has blessed the world.
More than your ability, talents, money or possessions, the Lord wants you. A yielded life is a God-centered life; a God-centered life will be an instrument in the hands of the Master Musician. From your life He will bring forth sweet heavenly music to bless a needy world.” *(see credit below.)
The question is this: Are we willing to give ourselves to Him? Will we put ourselves in the hands of the Master Musician so that we make beautiful music? I pray that I will do just that!
7But we have this treasure (Christ) in jars of clay (us) to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. 2 Corinthians 4:7

Marching Through God's Beautiful World!!
What an absolutely beautiful Saturday morning! The sun is shining and the weather forecasters promise us 50 degrees by this afternoon. Fifty degrees may not even be up to the average for this time of year but after the cold winter weather we have had I will definitely take it. Can't help but think of the Bible verse "This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it." Well, I am choosing to rejoice in that fifty degree forecast. I hope to get my filthy car washed today and maybe even work at cleaning out my flower beds. And, of course, I can't pass up a good walk on a day like this! Well, I guess I had better get going, don't you? A lot to do and a little time to do it in, as the old saying goes. I need to work a nap in there sometime because tonight we are going to have two of our munchkins and get to spend the day tomorrow with them. I have been looking forward to this all week!
Since I am in a hurry to get my "inside" work done and get outside I am not going to tarry in my writing ( I usually write too much anyway.) But, as we enjoy the great beauty of God's world today let's ponder His majesty. I am going to close today with one of my favorite Psalms when I am enjoying His world. At the end I will leave a link for a song to go with it. Have a wonderful, thankful, God-praising weekend my precious friends!

Marching Through His Word (cont'd)
Psalm 25:1-5 (New Living Translation)
1 O Lord, I give my life to you. 2 I trust in you, my God! Do not let me be disgraced, or let my enemies rejoice in my defeat. 3 No one who trusts in you will ever be disgraced, but disgrace comes to those who try to deceive others. 4 Show me the right path, O Lord; point out the road for me to follow. 5 Lead me by your truth and teach me, for you are the God who saves me. All day long I put my hope in you.
What a great prayer for us to pray every day! Praying this prayer will help keep us humble and point us to our all-knowing, all-powerful, all-sufficient God. By praying this prayer we acknowledge that: His way, not ours, will keep us on the right path; we have a need for guidance and He is our ultimate guide; we can find truth in His word where we can be taught by the Most High teacher; and He is God and our Savior and it is in this truth that our hope lies!
How many times have we gotten lost on a road trip and just kept trying and trying to find our way because we were sure we knew exactly how to get there? When we finally gave in and looked at the map (or turned on our GPS) we were there in no time and wondered to ourselves why we didn’t do that sooner. This is how it is in our Christian walk. Some days we are so sure we know how to manage our lives and yet we feel so lost and confused at the end of the day. What if we began each day by looking at the map, that is the Holy Bible, the word of God? Maybe we wouldn’t waste so much time trying to find our way! There used to be a joke about men that said: “the reason the Israelites wandered so long in the desert is because Moses, being a man, wouldn’t look at the map.” Man or woman, we all need to follow our ultimate guide, Jesus Christ to stay on the right path!
I hope we let God lead us in His direction today. Just imagine where we might end up!!

MARCHING THROUGH HIS WORD!
If I had my life to live over again I would definitely do a lot of things differently. One of those things would be to study the Bible more. My knowledge of the Bible is so limited that it is embarrassing to me and I shutter to think how I will account for this on judgment day! Almost everything I do know about the Bible I have learned as a result of teaching Sunday School for years. You have to search the scriptures when you teach! This month I would like to focus on some of my favorite Bible verses and my thoughts about them. I hope that as I share thoughts on a few verses that it will be an encouragement for you during your day as well as maybe a little motivation to dig into the scriptures a little deeper as I hope to do. Maybe we can sort of be a “Blogging Bible Study!” I would love for you to share your comments at the end of my blogs. It isn’t hard to do. Just follow the instructions. Today I would like to share some verses from Psalms 19: 7 – 14
7 The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.
8 The commandments of the Lord are right, bringing joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are clear, giving insight for living.
9 Reverence for the Lord is pure, lasting forever.
The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair.
10 They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold.
They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb.
11 They are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them.
12 How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults.
13 Keep your servant from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin.
14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
God’s instructions are the best and when we read in His word and receive His instruction our souls are revived! It is so easy to get caught up in the world and let our hearts (soul) grow cold. When we allow our lives to become so busy that we don’t take time to read the Bible and think about how His word applies to our lives, it is easy to become indifferent to sin. Reading our Bible daily helps us to realize where we are falling short and keeps us on track. Sure it is hard to find time to get quiet and read the Bible, but we generally make time for the things that are important to us and what could be more important than hearing a word from God each day!? As the verses above point out, His word is perfect, trustworthy, right, clear, pure, true and more valuable than anything else in life and will bring joy to our heart!
Verses 13 & 14 would be wonderful verses to tape onto our bathroom mirrors and start every day reading as a prayer. Since our lives may be the only “Bible” some people ever read, these words will certainly keep us “walking the walk” instead of just “talking the talk.”
I pray that your walk and my walk will speak volumes today!!! Let’s march on to victory through Him!

The laws of the Lord are true; each one is fair.
10 They are more desirable than gold, even the finest gold.
They are sweeter than honey, even honey dripping from the comb.
11 They are a warning to your servant, a great reward for those who obey them.
12 How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults.
13 Keep your servant from deliberate sins! Don’t let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin.
14 May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart
be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.
God’s instructions are the best and when we read in His word and receive His instruction our souls are revived! It is so easy to get caught up in the world and let our hearts (soul) grow cold. When we allow our lives to become so busy that we don’t take time to read the Bible and think about how His word applies to our lives, it is easy to become indifferent to sin. Reading our Bible daily helps us to realize where we are falling short and keeps us on track. Sure it is hard to find time to get quiet and read the Bible, but we generally make time for the things that are important to us and what could be more important than hearing a word from God each day!? As the verses above point out, His word is perfect, trustworthy, right, clear, pure, true and more valuable than anything else in life and will bring joy to our heart!
Verses 13 & 14 would be wonderful verses to tape onto our bathroom mirrors and start every day reading as a prayer. Since our lives may be the only “Bible” some people ever read, these words will certainly keep us “walking the walk” instead of just “talking the talk.”
I pray that your walk and my walk will speak volumes today!!! Let’s march on to victory through Him!
