“For God SO LOVED the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
This was probably the first verse I memorized as a child. But no matter how old I get I will always love this verse. This is what it is all about. It is why we have that peace and hope we have been focusing on during this Advent season. If we didn’t have the assurance of God’s love as demonstrated through the gift of His Son Jesus we couldn’t experience peace in the midst of our trials or feel any hope when things are going badly.
We love. We love our parents, grandparents, siblings, spouses, children and grandchildren. We think we know what love is, but we can’t even imagine the scope of God’s love for us. His love is the ultimate love. For us, as parents or grandparents, we can’t fathom sacrificing our precious children to save someone else!
We can, however, relate to unconditional love because we love our children and grandchildren no matter what they might do. And we also know a little bit about sacrificial love because we know that we would lay down our own life for our own. However, we have no concept of what it means to lay down our life for anyone and everyone! His unfailing love is what Christmas is all about!
Prayer: Father, teach us how to love the way that you love.
